KIMCHI

Take a photo of people from Korea and they’ll likely say “Kimchi” instead of “Cheese”. Every person in Korea is said to eat about 40 pounds of the spicy cabbage each year on average.

Kimchi is super healthy with lots of vitamins and healthy bacteria. It can be eaten with rice, noodles, fish, meat or vegetables for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Kimchi has been made out of white cabbage or radishes and spices for over 2,000 years. Originally, it was buried in jars in the ground to ferment.

People from Korea first came to NYC about 100 years ago. Many Koreans immigrated to NYC after the Korean War between North Korea and South Korea.

Relocating from a different country and leaving behind everything familiar is hard. Many immigrants choose to live in the same neighborhoods as people from their country and cook foods that remind them of their home country.

Visit Koreatown in Midtown East or Queens to try kimchi and other delicious Korean dishes and to learn more about Korean culture.

If you were moving to a different country, which dishes would you cook to remind you of home?

Korea
Korea is a country in East Asia with borders to China and Russia. It’s close to Japan too. There are two states in Korea: North Korea and South Korea. From 1950 till 1953 they fought in a war against each other. The U.S. fought with South Korea and Russia with North Korea. There still is a lot of tension between the two Korean states and the military is protecting the borders on each side.
